This summer, we launched “STEM Voices of Tomorrow”, a City of Toronto-funded project designed to spark the interest of girls from equity-deserving backgrounds in North York and ignite their passion for STEM fields through interactive workshops and a podcast. Here’s a look at the experiences that made STEM Voices of Tomorrow unforgettable!

✿WE CREATED A PODCAST! ✿

We turned our participants into interviewers, content creators, and storytellers! They met with female professionals working in STEM fields from engineering to technology in Toronto throughout the summer, who shared their inspiring journeys, struggles, and triumphs. Our high school volunteers recorded our conversations and edited them into an interactive podcast! These episodes gave students the chance to learn directly from role models who proved that their dreams are within reach.

At the offset of our project, we took our middle school participants on a field trip to Barrett Centre For Technology Innovation. In collaboration with Humber Polytechnic and high school volunteers, we curated a STEM Workshop where students learned about STEM fields, conducted fun experiments, had a tour of the various labs within the college, and engaged in hands-on robotics and engineering activities!

After getting students familiarized with the wondrous world of STEM, we trained them on the art of interviewing and podcasting. Our high school volunteers tailored interactive presentations on how to ask questions, manage body language, use microphones and handle creative media interactions. We learned and laughed together!

For four consecutive weekends, our participants interviewed 4 amazing women working in STEM fields in Canada. Our high school volunteers recorded all the sessions on camera and audio, and edited them into clips and podcast episodes. We also filmed some instagram and TikTok content with everyone to make our work more accessible to a social media audience!
